  • Day of the Dead or Día de Muertos in Spanish is a Mexican holiday. It celebrates and honours loved ones that have passed away. The celebration is held from October 31 to November 2nd. The festival's origins are rooted in a combination of elements of indigenous beliefs and Catholic teachings.

The Aztecs, indigenous people of Mexico, believed there were several planes of existence which were separate but connected to the one on which we live in. When someone died it was believed that the place their soul would go to depended on the manner in which they died. The Aztecs had a month-long celebration in which they honored their ancestors and  left offerings to them.

When the Spaniards arrived in the sixteenth century, they introduced the Catholic faith to the  Aztecs and over time the Catholic teachings intermingled with the native beliefs to create new traditions. The festival related to death and celebrating the ancestors was moved to coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saints Day (November 1st) and All Souls Day (November 2nd).
